I think they could die (not sure), but pretty much the only thing that could kill them would be another wizard king, and not easily. But they were not as powerful as a creator god or something that could create entire worlds.they weren't quite that powerful. Wizard kings used to be immortal beings something like lesser gods - more than demigods (like Hercules or Achilles), they could create entire races of beings to serve and worship them, reshape parts of the planet, give magical powers to their followers, and create new magic. Who'd have thought that a wargame wasn't going to have lasting peace. They now rule half the world and the humans the other half. (Before AoW3) The Dark Elves and Wood Elves reunited. The Shadow Demons were defeated, but all the wizards were exiled to do so. (AoW:Shadow Magic) There was an invasion of Shadow Demons. The humans were nearly destroyed but saved by a wizard named Merlin. (AoW2) Later a bunch of super powerful wizards pretended to be gods and. Some Dark Elves also nearly destroyed the world by awakening the undead. The reconciliation side won, but the Elves were split in Wood Elves and Dark Elves. Some of the Elves wanted to live alongside the humans, others wanted to destroy them all. (AoW1) When the humans arrived, there were wars and they destroyed the Elven court. Once upon a time the Elves ruled over the world. Especially in the Eternal Lords campaign. You don't NEED to know this stuff, but if you do things will make a bit more sense. You can check out the sticky post at the top of the forum. To follow the plot of the campaigns it helps to know a bit about the plot of AoW1, 2 and AoW:Shadow Magic before you start. Even the campaign story is pretty much self contained, particularly if you play the human side. You don't really need to know the backstory. Yeah, the game is mostly about the random maps and individual scenarios.
